The Burrito Files - One Year Later

It has been slightly over a year since I embarked upon a project to go downtown and ask people, "If downtown Tucson were a burrito, what would be in it?" I have talked to over 150 people of all ages and backgrounds and heard the full range of comments - from negative to funny to bizarre. Some people hate downtown but the majority love it and want to see it be better. Folks remember coming downtown to go shopping at the department stores, attend church services, get married, start a first job, view a first art exhibit, experience a first kiss, and so much more. I believe that these positive sentiments and memories can be tapped to move downtown forward in a way that both honors the history and embraces innovation.

Year one focused on collecting these thoughts and stories. My plan for year two is to review the interviews and come up with a format to talk about the project with City Council (as mentioned in my interview in The Tucson Citizen), downtown stakeholders, and the public. It is my hope that the voices of the public can contribute to preserving and improving the heart of Tucson.

Downtown Scavenger Hunt!

Pop Up Spaces presents
Downtown Scavenger Hunt!! Sunday, March 1, 2009

Walk through the streets of downtown Tucson and you will find multiple FOR RENT signs on every block. While that may be discouraging to some Tucsonans, a group of artists sees these spaces as blank canvases. In the Downtown Scavenger Hunt on March 1, participants will be given clues to find 10 locations, each one with a short activity that will encourage them to engage with the current environment, reflect upon the historic record, and imagine future possibilities for the space. The resulting photography and writings will be displayed in the future at a time and venue TBA.

Clues and instructions can be picked up at Shot in the Dark Café, 121 East Broadway Blvd. between 12pm and 2pm.

Downtown Scavenger Hunt is free and appropriate for all ages.

Downtown Scavenger Hunt is the inaugural project of POP UP SPACES, a collaboration between artists Rachelle Diaz of Tu Scene, Molly McClintock of MAXED ART and Julie Ray of The Burrito Files. POP UP SPACES seeks to produce temporary, interactive, site-specific installations in empty spaces in which the visitors are not just expected to be passive viewers, but asked to be active participants. The goal of these art-based experiences is to enhance economic vitality and public engagement in downtown Tucson through promotion of the area's culture, history, architecture and business community.

Weigh In On The Future of The Burrito Files

Hi friends,

In the spirit of change and inclusion, I'd like your thoughts on what The Burrito Files should focus on next. I've interviewed over 150 people, collected lots of interesting and juicy ideas and stories, and received some great news coverage. Now what?

My thought is to focus on a specific downtown issue and work on making a real impact. Another possibility is to come up with creative ways of displaying and presenting the "data" I've collected.

Earl Wettstein's Comment on The Burrito Files

Julie,
Congratulations. Nice PR story on your art project in the Tucson Citizen.
I have some ideas on what should be in your downtown burrito.
First of all… about your desire to make us an art Mecca? If only, huh?
There are, what, six art Mecca’s in America, and 100,000 (really) new artists (me included) coming out of America’s art schools every year. Yikes. I see art Mecca’s in Scottsdale, Santa Fe, Miami now with Art Basel, New York of course, maybe Jackson Hole if you count Western art, and Los Angeles if only for it’s fabulous contemporary museums. Thank you Eli Broad.

What our downtown burrito needs is exactly what you said, something we already have and promote it. What we have is a vivid western history. I wish it were art, but TPAC is here to help do that and you see what they accomplish. You may wish to contact the Contemporary Art Society at TMA and see if they would like to help you. The current president is Barbara Jo McLaughlin, a terrific young woman artist sculptor.

But what I would like downtown Tucson to include inside its burrito skin is a tribute to what we have been and what would bring people here to buy your art, and that is a Wild West Museum. Tucson has an image of being wild and western. Or we used to have that before the tourism gurus decided that resorts were more saleable than history. The top Tucson money making attraction used to be Old Tucson before that fire burned it down and they rebuilt a plastic version that had none of the old panache of the original.

I think people across the US of A still think the Wild West starts here in Arizona. Why not a Wild West Museum that would be a drawing card for tourists, who in turn will buy our art? People would come here to feel the old west and they would leave their art dollars among us.
Once they come here with their wallets ready, they will buy all sorts of art from contemporary to western.

In 2007 I created an elaborate presentation on such a museum. I called it Tucson’s Wild West Museum. I presented it to many, many influential people including most of the current city council, only to have them say “Where’s the money, Earl?” I do not have that kind of money, but I did have stuff to put in the museum in the form of western and western movie artifacts saved from Old Tucson by my friend Bob Shelton, who used to own and run it.

Yet these politicians were - and are - sitting on millions of Rio Nuevo dollars they are spending on things like a Science Center for the UofA and a rebuild of the old Convento, which no local will go see more than once, and which tourists will not stop to see at all. But I am old and long in the tooth, and out of energy to keep after them. Your youth and energy are your best weapons.

Burritos need spice, and the Wild West is spicy.

The Tucson Citizen article generated 77 online comments. Granted, at least half, if not more, were private conversations that had nothing to do whatsoever with The Burrito Files.

Here is one of my favorites:
"Just what we need. More welfare artists turning out crap no one wants. Isn't there enough of that already?"

In response, my friend Tom wrote me,
"Is this comment about US automakers or The Burrito Files?"

Downtown Saturday Night

The Burrito Files hung out for a few hours at Downtown Saturday Night on Congress Street. A lively crowd strolled down the street watching live music, visiting art galleries, and enjoying the festive atmosphere. I especially enjoyed the street musicians with the lamp that spouted fire every so often. (In the picture they are setting up. The fire lamp is in between them.)

leftover ingredients like old ground beef and middle of the road frijoles covered with nice, new fresh salsa, heirloom tomato and garden-grown exotic cabbage. Explanation - I see downtown as largely leftovers. The salsa represents the new "shoots" coming up and the heirloom veggies are the leading edge of the artistic community that is putting its mark on top of the old stuff.
Have any significant events in your life happened in downtown? I got my first kiss in the Fox Theatre and 18 months later I was dragged into the Rialto Theater (on a friend's blind date) to see the movie Deep Throat.

Park(ing) Day A Success!

Park(ing) Day was a great success for The Burrito Files and Tucson. Over 80 spots were produced in Tucson, the most out of any participating city. Tucson received great local coverage for the event including stories on/in KOLD News 13 (I was on the morning news!), Arizona Daily Star, and Tucson Citizen. Pictures of me and the burrito cart are on the home page of AZ Daily Star's website. Look for Park(ing) Day under Slide Shows. Thanks to KOLD reporter Lauren Burgoyne, AZ Daily Star photographer Alfredo Araiza, and Tucson Weekly reporter Mari Herreras for your coverage!! Also, a big thanks to Jodi Blaylock, the Tucson coordinator, Chris Leighton of ParkWise, and David Aguirre of Dinnerware Artspace.

The Burrito Files at Park(ing) Day!

Join The Burrito Files at Tucson's first Park(ing) Day this Friday, September 19th.

The Burrito Files will set up shop with its NEW burrito cart in the public parking space in front of Dinnerware Artspace @ 264 E. Congress. The block between 5th Ave and Arizona Alley will feature 4 Park(ing) Day spaces hosted by The Burrito Files, NEW ARTiculations Dance Theatre, Preen, and Maxed Art (times will vary per space).

Come by to check out the cart, submit YOUR burrito file, sit and shmooze, and enjoy our city's public spaces.
